My summers on the River

6:00 am Home

As a child, I spent many of my summer breaks at my Grandmother’s house on the river. Everyday, my cousins and I would go down to river to find things to do. Some days we swam. Other times we brought our rods for fishing. One of our favorite things to do was to throw out crab lines from the pier to catch crabs. One day, my grandmother sent us on a mission. The mission was to dig for mussels. She explained that mussels were shell fish, like clams. In order to find them, we had to wade near the shore, and dig them up. The reason she wanted us to dig for mussels is because she had a book full of mussels recipes. My grandmother said that it had been many years since she was able to get mussels herself, because of her bad back. My cousins and I spent the whole day digging, and returned with loads of mussels. It made my grandmother so happy to be able to use her recipes.
