Many Guitar Articles State That You do Not Need to Know How to Read Music

So you want to learn how to play the guitar, but what is the first thing you need to learn?  You may think that in order to become a successful guitarist, you will need to learn how to read music first, but this is not true.  After reading several guitar articles, I have found that most guitar players have no idea how to read music because they learn how to play by using their highly trained ear.  Many times this is the best way to learn a new song, mostly because you will have much better success by trying to get your music to sound like the actual song instead of following the written music.
